CHAPTER IX - PARKS AND RECREATION

A. INTRODUCTION

This analysis is the most recent of several planning documents pertaining to parks and recreation that have been prepared for the City of Kalamazoo since 1987. The previous Parks and Recreation Plan 1992-1996 was approved by the City of Kalamazoo Planning Commission, Kalamazoo City Commission and the Michigan Department of Natural Resources in 1992, and amended and updated in 1994 and 1995.

The City of Kalamazoo's division of Parks and Grounds and the Division of Recreation, Leisure, and Cultural Services are responsible for maintaining and managing the City's parks and recreation facilities and programs. The 1997-2002 plan was prepared with the assistance of McKenna Associates, a planning consulting firm located in Farmington Hills, and with the active involvement of the City and Recreation Board administration. Citizen input, through a Community Leader Recreation survey, focus groups, neighborhood meetings, public hearings and forums, also contributed to this report.

Following initial reviews of the plan by the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board, the plan will be submitted to the Kalamazoo City Commission for further review and refinement. Throughout the process, all meetings were open to the public. Notices were posted beforehand, and advertised in the newspaper, as required by the Open Meetings Act.
